The domain industry has had a big shake up this year. The rise of the discount registrar is being lead by GoDaddy and eNom.
GoDaddy on the retail front and eNom on the wholesale front. Mean while Network Solutions continues to bleed domains at an alarming pace.
It looks like 2003 will be the strongest year yet for the Discount Registrars.
GoDaddy got a big boost as well in a high profile lawsuit against Network Solutions earlier this year were Network Solutions eventually settled out of court. The case was not about GoDaddy having a better price, but it certainly got the publics' attention that GoDaddy was just as qualified and had a better price. Shortly after the lawsuit starting get a lot of air time GoDaddy's registration/transfer numbers shot way up.
In the Reseller market eNom has been kicking butt and winning away bulk domain holders from other registrars in droves.
Their pricing is mean and their quality service is outstanding. With lots of Bulk Resellers still out there, eNom should have a good year in 2003.
In other news Dotster has acquired NamesDirect bring Dotster back into the top 10 Registrars.
However the acquisition had a dark cloud hanging over it because it was reveled in the press
right after the acquisition that NamesDirect had exposed over 180,000 clients
credit card information with a coding error.
