イランとアメリカ合衆国の関係は、政治的には19世紀後半の半ばにナーセロッディーン・シャーが初めての公式大使としてミールザー・アボルハサン・シーラーズィー（）をワシントンD.C.に派遣したことに始まる。一方、合衆国も1883年、サミュエル・ベンジャミンをイランへの初めての公式外交使節に任じている。以後、イランとアメリカ合衆国は第二次世界大戦後の時代まで政治的・文化的な同盟国であり、この政治的同盟関係は1979年まで維持された。しかし紛争的諸事件の惹起により、両国間の関係は緊張状態に入ることになった。
