  • What is an IP Address?

    An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a label assigned to a device utilizing the Internet. Every domain is issued an IP address so that your device knows where to go and gather the information to display that particular site.

    DNS Tools allows you to Ping, Traceroute or look up DNS for any domain or IP directly from your Web browser. DNS Tools also allow you to view information about your own IP address using the My IP tool. This tool offers a user-friendly and graphical view of IP information.

  • What is the Ping tool? What is it used for?

    The Ping tool is used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. A Ping measures the time it takes for packets to be sent from the local host to a destination computer and back. The Ping tool measures and records the round-trip time of the packet and any losses along the way. DomainTools' Ping service offers Ping information in to display in a graphical and organized manner available directly from the DomainTools Web page. This tool tests basic connectivity of domains and IP addresses. Use this tool for troubleshooting purposes and to test response times.

  • What is the Traceroute tool? What is its purpose?

    The Traceroute tool traces the route taken by a packet from a web server to the given IP address. This tool is useful for ensuring that packets arrive at their intended destination and for testing basic connectivity of domains and IPs.
