What is a Name Server?
When you register a domain, you are ultimately registering a word or phrase that references a particular IP address. A name server is a service that researches those words or phrases and directs web browsers (or another application) how to find the machine that the domain is intended to point to.

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a label assigned to a device utilizing the Internet. Every domain is issued an IP address so that your device knows where to go and gather the information to display that particular site.

Name Server Alert is DomainTools' powerful name server monitoring technology. Monitor the daily activity of .com, .net, .org, .biz, .us, and .info domains on any name server under 50,000 domains and receive an email notification when there are new and/or deleted domains. You can even view graphs of historical information for your monitored domain servers and save those graphs to share with others. You can even drill down and view full details of domains that have been transferred, added and deleted.

Top of page ^Can I monitor my personal Name Server? How much does this cost?
If DomainTools monitors your personal name server, you may use the Name Server Alert service to monitor it. Name Server Alert access is granted to our Standard and Professional Members. Novice Members can purchase A la Carte alerts for this service. Novice Members: No access to Name Server Alert. Novice Members may purchase A la Carte Name Server Alerts at $9.95 for 10 alerts. Standard Members are granted 3 Name Server Alerts per month. Add-on alerts may be purchased in bundles of 50 for $9.95/mo. Professional Members are granted 100 Name Server Alerts per month. Add-on alerts may be purchased in bundles of 50 for $9.95/mo.
Top of page ^What is an Alert List? What can I view on my Alert List?
When a name server is added to the Name Server Alert, that name server is added to your DomainTools "Alert List". The Alert List is simply a list of name servers that you are currently monitoring. The Alert List includes the following information: Server Data - viewable graph summary of the name server history over time Domains - the number of domains contained in the server Cost - number of units used to monitor the particular server Email Alert Option- You have the option to receive email alerts (detailed or summarized) when changes occur to the particular server Alert Data - Select the type of alerts you want to receive about the server From this page, you can select to turn email notification on or off and or subscribe to an XML or HTML RSS Feed.
