Earlier this month, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a PSA to help the public to recognize and avoid spoofed election-related internet domains during the 2020 election year.
“A spoofed domain may feature an alternate spelling of a word (“electon” instead of “election”), or use an alternative top-level domain, such as a “[.]com” version of a legitimate “[.]gov” website,” according to the PSA.
Spoofed, or lookalike, domain names also remain a prominent threat for enterprises as well. Cybercriminals will often register lookalike domains to commit phishing attacks and other infringing activity against popular brands. A single spoofed domain can cause considerable damage to a company’s reputation, business continuity, and even its financial bottomline. Unfortunately, organizations often discover these domains after a crime has been committed.
