Identifying Possible Spoofed Domains In Minutes

Earlier this month, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a PSA to help the public to recognize and avoid spoofed election-related internet domains during the 2020 election year.

“A spoofed domain may feature an alternate spelling of a word (“electon” instead of “election”), or use an alternative top-level domain, such as a “[.]com” version of a legitimate “[.]gov” website,” according to the PSA.

Spoofed, or lookalike, domain names also remain a prominent threat for enterprises as well. Cybercriminals will often register lookalike domains to commit phishing attacks and other infringing activity against popular brands. A single spoofed domain can cause considerable damage to a company’s reputation, business continuity, and even its financial bottomline. Unfortunately, organizations often discover these domains after a crime has been committed.

Next week, in a significant advancement in the fight against phishing and other cyberattacks, Farsight will announce the availability of DNSDB 2.0 Flexible Search, which, among other functionality, will help organizations identify possible spoofed domains as soon as they are observed on the Internet. We are excited for you to try it yourself.
